AIChE- MD Section Meeting Minutes

AIChE Maryland Section

18 August 2005 at the Engineers Club

The following members were present for the meeting: Amy Glemza, Kathryn Gunkel, Steve Lui, Barb Roeper, Brian Serp, Ira Silverberg, and Jon Valentine.

Section Leadership

The first order of business was the nomination and election of Officers and Executive Committee members for the 2005-2006 program year.  The following Officers were elected:

  • Chair – Kathryn Gunkel
  • Vice Chair/Program Committee Chair – Barb Roeper
  • Secretary – Brian Serp
  • Treasurer – Jon Valentine

In addition to the Officers, the following members are part of the Executive Committee:

  • Past Chair – Brian Serp
  • Member-at-Large – Steve Lui
  • Member-at-Large – Ira Silverberg
  • Nominating Committee Chair – Amy Glemza
  • Air Quality Control Advisory Committee Representative – Steve Dyer
  • Associate Engineers Council of ESB Representative – Kathryn Gunkel
  • Maryland Board of Registration for Professional Engineers – Skip Harclerode

Barb Roeper will continue to maintain the membership and email address lists, and Kathy Gunkel and her son will be Webmasters.  G. Oguntimein (Tunde) will be contacted to see whether he would like to remain as Scholarship Committee Chair, and others expressing interest will be offered other jobs, such as Young Member Coordinator, nominating committee, etc.  In addition, we will attempt to strengthen the connections between our section and the student section members/faculty advisors at Johns Hopkins University and UMBC.

Meeting Schedule and Topics

The establishment of a meeting schedule was discussed, and it was decided that meetings would be held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Engineers Club.  Since our section is a member of the Engineering Society of Baltimore (ESB), we are entitled to free meeting space.  In addition, we can select food items from the “Light Fare” menu, which enables us to maintain meeting costs at the same level as meetings held at restaurants.  In cases where a plant tour or other special event is planned, we will attempt to schedule it for the regularly-planned date and notify the membership about the change in place.  Other meetings or events can also be added to the schedule on other dates.

Meeting topics were also discussed.  Specific programs to be included in the schedule include an update on chitosan by Greg Payne, a Clipper City Brewery tour, an awards banquet for members and scholarship recipients (including history of section), student presentations (at JHU), student forum (at UMBC), plant tour(s) (including Harley Davidson in York, PA), and an Aberdeen Ironbirds baseball game.  Additional events (not regular meeting dates) include the monument lighting event at the Engineers Club and the ESB awards banquet.

It was decided that the expertise of our members would provide an excellent source of meeting presentations.  Meeting themes were selected as follows: environmental, process equipment, and plant security.  We will advertise for interested members to speak on these topics.  The presentation lengths for each speaker would be 45 minutes (if one speaker), 25 minutes (if two speakers), or 15 minutes (if three speakers).  We will also be asking for members to provide opportunities for plant tours.  CLICK ON THE “CALENDAR” LINK ABOVE FOR A LIST OF SCHEDULED MEETINGS.

The meeting cost will be held at $30 for members and guests and $15 for students.  We will offer an option that will allow members to pre-pay for three meetings for a total of $75.  The pre-payment will cover any three meetings during the program year; the member does not need to attend three consecutive meetings.  We will also plan to develop a corporate sponsorship program, which would allow companies to donate money toward meeting costs (and/or scholarships) in exchange for the opportunity to advertise its products and services to the members (either at meetings, on the website, or in the newsletter).

Other Business Items

  • Our organization is listed at the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Baltimore County Public Library, both of which have contacted us to update our information.  Barb Roeper will follow up with these updates.
  • National AIChE requests the following information from our section: yearly local section report, yearly treasurer’s report, yearly list of officers, and list of meeting dates for Fall 2006.  Barb Roeper will follow up with these items, with the exception of the treasurer’s report (Jon Valentine).
  • We have run out of section magnets and mugs.  It was decided that we would look into vinyl window clings (or calendars) and nice-quality pens.  Barb Roeper will follow up with these items, with the assistance of anyone else who has information or interest.
  • Our section should nominate members for ESB awards (Engineer of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year, Meritorious Service, and Project of the Year) to be presented at the banquet on February 22.
  • Our Fellow-eligible members should be identified and nominated.  Barb Roeper will identify those members from the membership list, and Kathy Gunkel will look into the nomination process.
